Back in 1998 when I first started using the handle reddirthippy everyone asked what it meant. A search on any of the many engines would have brought up the band Red Dirt Rangers, maybe. And you probably would have gotten some information on why the dirt in Oklahoma and Georgia was red other than that naughta.
I noticed a while back one of our local stations was using Red Dirt Diaries as a segment on local feel good stories. Today I decided to search again and holy crap. Just a sample of the results.

the list goes on and on In the first several pages the Red Dirt Rangers don't even show up though Red Dirt music does. The term red dirt music was inspired in Stillwater to save me some typing from Wiki:
Like those two, Red Dirt music grew from a specific place in Stillwater. The place was an old two-story, five-bedroom house called "The Farm" - for two decades the center of what evolved into the Red Dirt scene. The house, located on the outskirts of Stillwater, was the country home of Bob Childers. Eventually Childers left The Farm, but the Red Dirt scene continued to grow and thrive.
I don't remember a lot of the bands I heard there (usually a bit of drinking was involved) I do remember one Rugby party, guys jumping off the beer truck and belly flopping on the ground, a VW beetle flipped on it side among the many cars parked on the gravel road leading to the house. The guy I was with worked on VWs we both stopped and just looked at the under side of the car his words "I wish they were all like that it would so much easier to work on". This was about the same time I first saw Garth Brooks, when he played 'Aunt Molly's Rent Free Music House' on a Friday night. He was still tossing a javelin and singing other people's works then. The Rangers didn't show up til a few years later.
Ohh the Days of Youth, if I knew then what I know now I wouldn't have had near as much fun.
How Red Dirt has grown, but it is a lot more than what gets on your shoes or stains your jeans. Red dirt is in the heart, the guts, and burrowed in the brain; it is a history of who we are as well as what we walk on. I am descended from sod farmers, native Americans, and early peace keepers in both Oklahoma and Georgia. That is why I use the Red Dirt moniker, the hippy part is a story for another day.
